Enlarged Tonsils

Enlarged Tonsils are common in children and can contribute to snoring, mouth breathing, swallowing difficulties and disturbed sleep.

Diagnosis involves an ENT assessment of the tonsils and symptoms, with consideration of sleep quality and breathing patterns. A sleep study may be recommended when sleep apnoea is suspected.

Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and their impact on sleep, breathing and daily life. Tonsillectomy may be considered when enlarged tonsils cause significant or persistent problems + Explore Paediatric ENT Surgery

Glue Ear

Glue ear occurs when fluid builds up behind the eardrum, often following a cold or ear infection. It can cause muffled hearing and may affect speech, learning and communication.

Diagnosis involves examining the eardrum and assessing hearing, often using tympanometry and age appropriate hearing tests. The duration and severity of the fluid are also considered.

Many cases resolve naturally and can initially be monitored. Persistent glue ear with hearing or developmental concerns may require ventilation tubes (grommets), with adenoid treatment considered in selected children. + Explore Paediatric ENT Surgery

Recurrent Ear Infections

Recurrent ear infections are repeated episodes of middle-ear infection that can cause pain, fever, irritability and temporary hearing changes. They are particularly common in young children.

Diagnosis involves examining the ears and reviewing the frequency, severity and duration of infections. Hearing assessment may be recommended if infections are frequent or hearing concerns persist.

Treatment may include observation, pain relief and antibiotics when appropriate. For children with frequent infections or persistent middle-ear fluid, grommets may be considered following specialist assessment.

Enlarged Adenoids

Enlarged Adenoids can obstruct the back of the nose and affect normal breathing during sleep. They may contribute to mouth breathing, snoring, nasal congestion and recurrent ear problems.

Diagnosis is based on the child's symptoms and an ENT examination, with assessment of nasal breathing, sleep and ear health. Nasal endoscopy may be used to assess the size and position of the adenoids.

Mild Symptoms may be managed with observation or medical treatment where appropriate. Adenoidectomy may be recommended when enlargement causes persistent nasal obstruction, sleep-disordered breathing or recurrent ear problems.  + Explore Paediatric ENT Surgery

Nasal Obstruction

Nasal Obstruction can make it difficult for children to breathe comfortably through their nose and may lead to mouth breathing, snoring or disturbed sleep. Causes can include enlarged adenoids, allergies or structural problems.

Diagnosis involves assessing the child's symptoms, nasal passages and breathing pattern to identify the underlying cause. An ENT examination and, when appropriate, nasal endoscopy may be performed.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include medical therapy for allergies or inflammation. Surgery may be considered when enlarged adenoids or structural problems cause persistent obstruction. + Explore Paediatric ENT Surgery
