Nose & Sinus Surgical Procedures

FESS - Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

FESS is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis and other conditions affecting the sinus drainage pathways. It aims to improve sinus ventilation and drainage while preserving healthy tissue.

FESS may be recommended when chronic sinus symptoms persist despite appropriate medical treatment. It can help relieve ongoing congestion, facial pressure, nasal discharge and recurrent sinus infections.

Using a small endoscope through the nostrils, blocked sinus drainage pathways are carefully opened and diseased tissue removed where necessary. Nasal congestion and discharge are common during recovery, with saline rinses and follow-up care supporting healing over the following weeks.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is surgery to straighten a deviated nasal septum, the structure seperating the two sides of the nose. It can improve nasal airflow and breathing when septal deviation causes significant obstruction.

Septoplasty may be recommended for persistent nasal blockage, difficulty breathing through the nose or symptoms associated with a significantly deviated septum.

The procedure is performed through the inside of the nose, carefully repositiong or removing selected areas of cartlidge and bone to improve airflow. Congestion and swelling are common initially, with breathing gradually improving as the nose heals over the following weeks.

Turbinate Reduction

Turbinate reduction is a procedure used to reduce enlarged nasal turbinates that contribute to persistent nasal blockage. The aim is to improve airflow while preserving normal nasal function.

Surgery may be recommended when enlarged turbinates cause ongoing nasal obstruction despite appropriate medical treatment, particularly in patients with chronic nasal congestion.

The surgeon reduces the size of the enlarged turbinates while preserving the protective lining of the nose. Temporary congestion, swelling and crusting are common, with saline rinses and appropriate aftercare supporting recovery.

Nasal Polyp Surgery

Nasal polyp surgery removes obstructive polyps from the nose and sinuses to improve nasal breathing and sinus drainage. Polyps are non-cancerous growths associated with chronic inflammation.

Surgery may be recommended when nasal polyps cause persistent blockage, reduced sense of smell or chronic sinus symptoms that have not responded adequately to medical treatment.

Using an endoscope through the nostrils, the surgeon carefully removes polyps and opens affected sinus drainage pathways where required. Congestion and nasal discharge are common initially, with saline rinses, medications and follow-up supporting healing.

Nasal Fracture Repair

Nasal fracture repair is a procedure to realign a broken or displaced nose following injury. Treatment can address both nasal appearance and functional problems such as difficulty breathing.

Treatment depends on the severity and position of the fracture and whether the injury has affected nasal function or appearance. Some fractures can be managed without surgery, while displaced fractures may require repair.

The nasal bones are carefully repositioned to restore alignment and improve the shape and function of the nose. Swelling, bruising and congestion are common initially, with healing continuing over the following weeks.

When Is Nose & Sinus Surgery Recommended?

Relief When Medical Treatment Isn't Enough

Many nose and sinus conditions can initially be managed with medication and other non-surgical treatments. When symptoms persist or significantly affect breathing, sleep, sinus health or quality of life, surgery may be considered.

Dr Marina Cavada provides personalised assessment and surgical treatment for conditions including chronic sinusitus, nasal obstruction, deviated septum, enlarged turbinates and nasal polyps. Treatment is tailored to the underlying cause and each patient's individual needs.

Persistent Nasal Blockage

Difficulty breathing through the nose that continues despite appropriate medical treatment may be related to a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or other structural problems.

Chronic Sinus Symptoms

Ongoing congestion, facial pressure, nasal discharge or recurrent sinus infections may indicate chronic sinus disease requiring specialist assessment.

Reduced Quality of Life

When Nasal or sinus symptoms interfere with sleep, exercise, work or everyday activites, surgical treatment may provide an opportunity to improve nasal function and overall quality of life.

Personalised Assessment & Treatment

Every patient has different symptoms, anatomy and treatment goals. Dr. Cavada assesses the underlying cause of nasal and sinus problems before recommending surgery, with treatment tailored to each patient's needs.
