Paediatric ENT Surgical Procedures

Grommet Insertion (Ear Tubes)

Grommets are small ventilation tubes inserted into the eardrum to allow air into the middle ear and help prevent fluid building up. They are commonly used to treat persistent glue ear and recurrent ear infections.

Grommets may be recommended when persistent middle-ear fluid causes hearing difficulties, or when a child experiences frequent ear infections that significantly affect their wellbeing.

Grommets are inserted through a small opening in the eardrum, usually during a short procedure under general anaesthesia. Most children recover quickly, with the tubes usually remaining in place for several months before naturally coming out as the eardrum heals.

Tonsil & Adenoid Surgery

Tonsil and adenoid surgery removes enlarged or frequently infected tonsils and/or adenoids that may interfere with breathing, sleep, swallowing or ear health.

Surgery may be recommended for children with obstructive sleep apnoea, significant snoring, persistently enlarged tonsils or adenoids, or recurrent tonsilitis and related problems.

The tonsils and/or adenoids are carefully removed through the mouth under general anaesthesia. Recovery varies depending on the procedure, with a sore throat, reduced appetite and tiredness common during the first days after surgery.

Ear Surgery for Recurrent Infections

Ear surgery may be recommended for children who experience recurrent ear infections or persistent middle-ear problems that do not adequately respond to medical management.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include grommet insertion, management of persistent fluid or other procedures to improve middle-ear health and reduce recurrent infections.

The specific procedure depends on the child's ear condition and may involve grommet insertion or other targeted ear surgery. Recovery is generally straightforward, with follow-up appointments used to monitor healing, hearing and middle-ear health.

Inferior Turbinate Reduction

Inferior turbinate reduction reduces the size of enlarged tissues inside the nose that can contribute to persistent nasal blockage and difficulty breathing through the nose.

It may be considered when enlarged turbinates cause ongoing nasal obstruction despite appropriate medical treatment, particularly where nasal breathing is affecting sleep or daily activities.

The turbinates are carefully reduced while preserving the healthy nasal lining and normal nasal function. Temporary congestion, swelling and crusting are common, with nasal saline and follow-up care supporting recovery.

Paediatric Nose & Sinus Surgery

Paediatric nose and sinus surgery addresses structural or sinus problems that can cause persistent nasal obstruction, recurrent sinus symptoms or diffculty breathing through the nose.

Surgery may be considered when symptoms persist despite appropriate medical treatment. Depending on the underlying problem, procedures may include endoscopic sinus surgery or, in selected cases, septoplasty.

The specific procedure is tailored to the child's condition and may involve endoscopic surgery through the nostrils or correction of a significantly deviated septum. Nasal congestion and swelling are common initially, with recovery progressing over the following weeks.

When Is Paediatric ENT Surgery Recommended?

When Symptoms Affect You Child's Health & Wellbeing

Many paediatric ENT conditions can initially be managed with observation, medication or other non-surgical treatments. When symptoms persist, significantly affect daily life, or interfere with breathing, hearing or sleep, surgery may be considered.

Dr Marina Cavada provides personalised assessment and surgical treatment for children with conditions affecting the ears, nose, throat and airway. Treatment is carefully tailored to each child's symptoms, development and individual needs.

Common Symptoms

Breathing & Snoring

Persistent mouth breathing, nasal blockage or loud snoring can affect sleep quality and may indicate enlarged tonsils, adenoids or other airway problems.

Hearing Difficulties

Muffled hearing, frequent ear infections or persistent fluid behind the eardrum can affect communication, learning and development.

Sleep Disturbance

Restless sleep, pauses in breathing, frequent waking or daytime tiredness may indicate sleep-disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnoea.
